Structural Repair
The solution supplied by the structural engineer was to jack up the broken beam and attach UPE steels either side. This required temporarily transferring weight vertically through two floors. We used 60 tonne of hydraulic lifting equipment and lifted it cm by cm and careful control of the weight transfer.
The new steels were longer than the street was wide and required lifting above the opposite roof line and lowering down and through a first floor window. To avoid a long road closure the replacement beams were manoeuvred in the first morning and the road opened in the afternoon.
